Ray Hyder - Artist

Owl after the Hunt- Soul authorship knife , 6-4 Titanium, ATS-34 ,316
Over the course of the past few years since I started this blog , I have come to understand more than ever before the life of an artist. Every day in search of the thrill found in creating the one masterpiece . Other artists know right away what I am talking about . The almost intangible product of the mind that keeps an artist going through the thick and the thin .For my self these years have been a most rewarded effort amidst all sorts of frustrations . Leaving me with many achievements in tooling and processes , as well as plethora of new skills under my belt.
Altogether setting the stage for artwork I was unable pull off until this point , Art pieces I have planned on creating for some time .
Star Blade - Sole authorship L6, 316 ,14KY
I look forward to the day I can share them.
For now I'll share again the greatest I have made yet.

  Enjoy,

Ray Hyder

King chain

Here is one of my classic designs , I call it the King Link.
Each link I formed and then pierced with my jewelers saw in sterling silver. Afterwards I soldered everything together , gave it a careful polish , and engraved some border lines.

This chain being a heavier link ( 5/8" wide) I decided to make a slip-link clasp . By pulling the slip link over the other link the two lock together , but with pressure will release from the wearers neck for safety.

Humming Bird bracelet

Oh the joys of color ! Here I have had the pleasure of working with titanium for this bracelet featuring a hummingbird and some of my signature five petal flowers which wrap around each side.
When the engraving was complete the mono tone grey of the shiny titanium seemed like it needed something more to make it pop.
So with careful licks of my torch flame I brought out the colors . Being careful not to heat it too much otherwise it turn back to grey.
After this I carefully polished the borders and flowers. In doing this I was satisfied that it takes quite a bit to rub the color off , yours to enjoy for a long time!

Warrior ring

Hello everyone! I am sharing with you today another of my more recent but earlier works .
The stainless steel Warrior ring!
I milled this ring out of a solid bar of 316 stainless steel , and proceeded to cover it with deeply relieved vine pattern engravings and a stippled background floor .
This ring was meant to be a solid heavy duty ring for the rugged type individual.

Being milled from one piece of stainless steel this is a ring that won't break on you nor will it tarnish.

            enjoy!
                       Ray.

Key Pendant

Here is a key pendant design I first assembled almost nine years ago . At a time when I had set up shop in a busy little ski town’s storefront window .  Between orders on my list I would work on various design concepts . This one I always remembered the best. The original one at that time was made
to unlock a silver box I constructed with a functioning skeleton key lock .I made the design again as a pendant to share with you here..  I started with flat sheets of silver that I pierced and cut with my saw. After bending , forming and seaming the tube for the key shank I soldered it all together.  Then I set and hand engraved the many challenging angles for the final touch .

The Heron Pendant

It was during a walk down the Twenty Mile bay beach at Harrison lake . With a friend on a late summer trip up the back roads outside of Vancouver .
That I was surprised by a heavy wing beat overhead .
A magnificent Heron!
Camera already in hand , I set off in hot pursuit of my new subject . Whom was making a lazy flight up a dried-out stream bed . Not far along the heron alighted on the gravel and began to walk , exploring small pools . I followed in a stealthy run to catch up . With carefully placed footsteps so as not to disturb , snapping pictures all the way. The heron , seemingly unperturbed by my presence continued up the streambed from pool to pool until -
jackpot! the next pool , this one larger than the rest was teeming with small fish landlocked within with the days of spring runoff long since past .
A glorious feast for a hungry heron !
Taking my cue , I made the most of the opportunity by inching in for some
ultra close ups . My presence , now perhaps too close for
comfort was cause enough for the heron to momentarily
pause its dinner . And after a moment of thought , the
heron took to the air again and made a short flight to
the next pool .
Satisfied with my bounty of photos and not wanting to
interrupt any further ,
I bid my new friend farewell.
Later at my workbench , being inspired by this
experience I decided I would recreate the heron
in gold and platinum .In order to represent the scene in
the way I remembered it , I needed to produce a number of new effects . Most importantly a gravel effect . As other methods had proven unsatisfactory , I had to developed several new chasing tools . These I used to place one by one each stone in the gravel bed .
Also I wanted a new background pattern  , this I was able to produce from another new chasing tool .
Combining these elements together with the developments and
techniques learned from previous pieces ,
and many of hours of work later .
