Ray Hyder - Artist

Owl after the Hunt- Soul authorship knife , 6-4 Titanium, ATS-34 ,316
Over the course of the past few years since I started this blog , I have come to understand more than ever before the life of an artist. Every day in search of the thrill found in creating the one masterpiece . Other artists know right away what I am talking about . The almost intangible product of the mind that keeps an artist going through the thick and the thin .For my self these years have been a most rewarded effort amidst all sorts of frustrations . Leaving me with many achievements in tooling and processes , as well as plethora of new skills under my belt.
Altogether setting the stage for artwork I was unable pull off until this point , Art pieces I have planned on creating for some time .

I look forward to the day I can share them.
For now I'll share again the greatest I have made yet.

  Enjoy,

King chain

Here is one of my classic designs , I call it the King Link.
Each link I formed and then pierced with my jewelers saw in sterling silver. Afterwards I soldered everything together , gave it a careful polish , and engraved some border lines.

This chain being a heavier link ( 5/8" wide) I decided to make a slip-link clasp . By pulling the slip link over the other link the two lock together , but with pressure will release from the wearers neck for safety.

Humming Bird bracelet

Oh the joys of color ! Here I have had the pleasure of working with titanium for this bracelet featuring a hummingbird and some of my signature five petal flowers which wrap around each side.
When the engraving was complete the mono tone grey of the shiny titanium seemed like it needed something more to make it pop.
So with careful licks of my torch flame I brought out the colors . Being careful not to heat it too much otherwise it turn back to grey.
After this I carefully polished the borders and flowers. In doing this I was satisfied that it takes quite a bit to rub the color off , yours to enjoy for a long time!

Story Ring

The lunar metal..Silver.
Trading at record highs on the world market.. A staple of Jewelers for time and memorial. Certainly a metal I am at home with , as most of my early pieces have been crafted from this illustrious material.
As time has gone on in the scope of my artistic career, I find myself working with silver less and less.
But the love is  not lost . With this in mind I'm sharing with you a ring , a ring made for a jaunt down the lane of my memories. A fun way to re-live the excitement I've always felt for creating wearable art. Fun indeed to ply my hands in this familiar element, if only so often now to be considered a rare treat.

Before you behold a ring with a story condensed in the crystalline structure know as silver!

The Heron Alights

When the previous winter seemed set in at its worst . I was drawn to reminisce about that day at harrison lake, when I encountered a heron. After sorting through some of the photos in my collection . I was freshly inspired, so I went ahead and made another pendant of the heron . This
time out of silver ,
with our heron striking an alternate pose.

The Blue Topaz Flower Ring

As an artist and a craftsman I am always seeking to challenge myself , and push the boundaries of what I can achieve . This ring was no exception . From the onset of the project , and throughout the fabrication process I knew that would not be able to complete the engraving with my existing tools . Taking my experience gained from making steel trade mark stamps for colleagues . And further experimentation , I was able to develop a micro graver setup . Essentially chisels the size of fine sewing needles , combined with 60x magnification under the microscope - and a great deal of excitement , the ring was soon thereafter complete .  The Blue Topaz Flower ring , a benchmark in the progression of my art.

Hummingbird Gathering Nectar

The Hummingbird Brooch Pin

On another summer day like any other , the sun gleaming as I walk through the garden -
broken by a mysterious high pitched sound .
No Mister hummingbird , I’m a red haired guy . Not a flower!
Yet another occasion were I had to duck out of the way of a hungry , but misguided hummingbird .
Fortunately there was an abundance of nectar nearby , allowing me time for close up observation of one of my favourite subjects , the small but mighty Hummingbird!
Represented here in

White & Yellow Gold

Flower Earrings

When I was a boy I would pore over my moms flower bulb catalogues ,
So many different colors and textures , simply amazing the variation and beauty found in nature .
I quickly found that these creations of nature were not so easy to reproduce in art , it would be years later as I refined my skills as an engraver that I would make a flower that I was happy with .- this time in silver , but still , too flat . and without the colors that had drawn me in the beginning .
Then , aha! GREEN gold! Pure gold , when alloyed with silver produces a lovely green .
This I matched with Rose gold , White and Yellow gold , and some three dimensional sculpting .
Here before you , are the results .
